Thandiswa Mazwai invites us to pause, reflect, and return. Sankofa, her cultural and musical festival is more than an event, it is a spiritual homecoming. Rooted in the Ghanaian concept meaning “to go back and fetch it,” Sankofa is a deliberate journey into memory, ancestry, and the soul of African expression.
The festival’s essence is deeply intentional. From its sonic curation to it’s atmosphere, Sankofa rejects spectacle for substance. It celebrates African artistry in its purest form, unapologetic and free. For women especially, Sankofa feels like a gentle yet powerful affirmation. Thandiswa Mazwai long celebrated for her fearlessness and authenticity, embodies a femininity that is intuitive, grounded, and sovereign. Through Sankofa, she extends that energy outward, creating a communal sanctuary where softness and strength coexist.
The festival will be held at the iconic Sun Carnival City on the 28th of February 2026. The stage is set to have Msaki from South Africa and Rwandan Grammy nominated singer and songwriter Somi.
Sankofa is where women are reminded that their stories are sacred, their voices powerful, and their becoming ongoing. In a world that often demands women to move forward without reflection, Thandiswa Mazwai invites us to look back not to dwell, but to reclaim.
